About the album
Compelling Melbourne artist Jessica Says, a classically trained cellist, returns with a four song digital EP after her 2017 album Do With Me What U Will. Badly injured in a fall from the window of a hotel room after her debut album We Need To Talk in 2009, Jessica Venables spent years in recovery, learning to walk again. She was so inspired by her treatment in hospital that she retrained and now works as a mental health professional.
Her eventual 2017 return saw Jessica’s music sharpened and darkened into polished pop noir, and earned her raves from The Fader, I-D and Frankie Magazine. New EP Downers strips away some of Do With Me What U Will’s glossy sheen and presents Jessica as a brittle Brill Building balladeer, with grand piano and cello supporting Venables’ stark, confronting lyrics. The EP was recorded by Evelyn Ida Morris (Pikelet) at Phaedra Studios. Downers is Jessica Says at her rawest and most captivating. Her lyrical investigations into desire and illness are icily incisive, bleakly funny, and linger in the mind long after the last piano note echoes away.
